"To honor Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month 2023, we asked AAPI members of the UC Berkeley School of Public Health community what the month means to them.

Today, we feature DrPH candidate Daryl Mangosing, MPH. As a Filipino American born in Guam, UC Berkeley School of Public Health DrPH candidate Daryl Mangosing knows that the AAPI community is not a monolithic unit. Indeed, there are more than 50 ethnic groups within the AAPI category in the United States, all with different cultures, needs, and histories."

PAGaSA Talks, Friday, October, 27 2023

Hosted by the Pilipinx American Graduate Student Association, PAGaSA Talks is a forum where Berkeley Pilipinx Graduate students share their research work with the community

Talk Title: Exploring harm reduction practices in sexualized drug use among sexual and gender diverse people in California

Talk Description: Sexualized drug use (i.e., recreational or illicit drug use to enhance sex) practices like "chemsex" or "party and play" can increase STI risks, notably among men who have sex with men. This study delves deeper, exploring the personal experiences, desires, and social contexts of sexual and gender diverse individuals in California who engage in SDU. Through in-depth interviews, the research seeks to understand how these individuals handle STI-prevention and navigate relationships. These insights guide more tailored, destigmatized interventions addressing sexual health and drug-related risks and contribute to a "counterpublic health" approach (see Kane Race).

Event description: Hear firsthand about their experiences so far with ChatGPT, what their peers are saying about it, their thoughts on ChatGPT in relation to course policies and academic integrity, how they think these AI tools should (or shouldn't) be used in the classroom, what they’d like to know about ChatGPT, and more.

Invited as a co-panelist for a moderated workshop that explores how Berkeley students feel about ChatGPT to provide insight into experiences (in and out of class) with language learning models and other generative AI tools, as well as applications and implications for higher education.

Event description: What is the relevance of the academy to achieving social justice? What does it mean to be a social change scholar? How can the academy be (re-)made to reflect the diversity and complexity of society, where students and communities have active voices and roles in shaping the pedagogy, research approaches, and policy production of the research university? For more than four decades, ISSI's Graduate Fellows Program has provided mentorship, training and support to doctoral students engaged in social change scholarship.
